This is the method I use for all my beginner drum students.
Dare I say, it’s the finest way to turn any novice into an intermediate level player.
I love Rich Lackowski’s “On The Beaten Path” because it is the premier way to teach the student beats, rhythm, timing, sight reading and more while still keeping them engaged
How does this method do that?
By us popular songs from the last 60 years as the core curriculum!
Let’s face it: Most methods only teach you rudiments. They don’t turn you into a functional drummer within what I would call a reasonable time frame.
There are some, but I prefer this curriculum to many others.
Now, don’t walk away from here saying, “Josh said I don’t need rudiments.” WRONG. However, This book will give you the tools, beats, and skills needed to play simple to complex beats in a very short amount of time.
Some of my students have progressed to jazz within 6 months of sitting down at a drum set!
Which brings me to my next point: This book was designed to teach how to play the drum set.
That is it’s main goal.
The plus side is that with the ability to read sheet music that this book also provides, you’ll be able to play timpani and orchestral instruments as well!
Great for taking you from the drum set to the school band room and vice versa, I highly recommend “On The Beaten Path” as one of the finest curriculums for turning any student into a bonified drum set player.
